Bruce Lee and William Cheung

My brother in-law William Cheung was a close friend of Bruce Lee in the early days in Hong Kong.  Following is a little information about the early days with William and Bruce.

William first met Bruce around 56 years ago (1949).  Bruce was already a child star of the day.  It was early one evening on the 27th November, after William had finished his homework, his Uncle took him to a childs birthday party.  The child happened to be Lee Siu-Jung (Little Dragon), Bruce Lee.

William was very excited about meeting a child star in person, he had seen two of his movies at that stage - one was "The Beginning of Man".  The apartment was situated on the second floor of a large building.  They pressed the door bell and eventually the housekeeper arrived to open the gate at the bottom of the stairs.  On reaching the second floor there were two more gates, one at the top of the stairs and the other on the left of the landing.  William was very surprised at such precautions.  He laster found out that all these gates were to delay the police in case of a raid, as Bruce's father was an opium consumer.  In those days opium smoking was very popular among the Chinese people, especially the opera and movie stars, Bruce's father at that time was a very famous Chinese operatic commedian.

Two of Bruce's best childhood friends were also at the party, Raymond Cheung, son of a very famous film star and Unicorn, also a child star.  William was introduced by his Uncle to Mr & Mrs Lee, who asked Bruce to look after him.  William followed Bruce to another room where all the kids wer playing and he took at good look at the star.  He found Bruce to be very skinny and his facial complexion was pale.  He was an inch or two shorter than William, but had very long arms.  His finger tips could reach his knees, when he let his arms down by his side.
